And the Trees Crept In
by Dawn Kurtagich
After arriving at La Baume, a secluded mansion far from their London home, Silla and Nori feel like they are finally safe. Their (crazy) Aunt Cath is kind and fun. Things seem to go well, until... (Crazy) Aunt Cath bakes Silla a birthday cake full of worms and then disappears into the attic, but not after telling Silla a story of the Creeper Man, an entity that she and her sisters summoned when they were children. The garden soil begins turns to ash and the plants - their main source of food - starts to die. The house, at the top of a hill when they first arrived, seems to be sinking. And the trees keep getting closer. At least, that's what it seems like. But maybe Silla is just crazy. After all, it seems to run in the family.
